Should You Buy a Propane Grill?

Cooking on a propane fueled grill is great but many people prefer natural gas for many reasons, running out of propane in the middle of cooking something or doing away with the headache of lugging the propane tank down to get it filled. Natural gas never runs out and in many cases is less expensive than propane. However, changing your propane grill to use natural gas can be uncomfortable for some people. Maybe this information will help you make your decision.

Before you make the switch from propane to natural gas it’s a good idea to make sure the gas grill you own is new enough or in good enough condition to make the adjustments. Changing your propane grill to use natural gas is not a complicated process, but if you intend to do it, no point in going through the process again next season when you have to buy a new grill.

Making the connection to the gas line outside of your home can be a dangerous project if you are not familiar with plumbing or gas connections. Because of this it is recommended that you call your gas company so they can schedule a qualified installer to connect your grill to the natural gas line. This is your safest bet.

Using Natural gas means you now have to make some changes to your grill so it can safely and efficiently accept natural gas as a fuel. Natural gas lines already are equipped with a regulator, so you will have to remove the existing regulator already installed on your gas grill. You need to take your time when doing this next step. Propane fittings and hoses are slightly smaller than natural gas fittings and hoses. Because of this the holes need to be made slightly larger to accommodate the natural gas fittings. If you make them too large you could encounter a problem, so go slow and check the size to insure you don’t make them too large.

After you have completed this process, simply connect the natural gas line to your gas grill in the same manner as you did with the propane hookup.
