Energy Saving Solar Panels


Most of us have used a small handheld calculator that relies on Solar Energy instead of a battery. Many of these tools don’t even bother with and on-off switch. Just move them away from a light source and they stop functioning. Much larger equipment also uses solar power. Satellites in space are equipped with solar panels to provide unlimited energy. Closer to home, you may have noticed solar energy used to power road signs lighted to signify hazards. More and more practical uses are being found for solar energy. The components of these systems are durable and require little maintenance.

Is it science fiction? No. Solar cells collect and convert sunlight into energy through basic principles. Solar cells, also called photovoltaic cells, are essential to the conversion process. These solar energy collectors absorb and retain light in semiconductor materials like silicon. Electrons in the light energy become loose and begin to flow. This flow of electrons makes an electric current which is them drawn out of the system through metal conductors. This is a very simple description of a technical process.

Solar cells are arrayed in a grid formation on the surface of Solar Panels. Groups of cells, enclosed in a frame connected electrically, are called modules. The panels are place in location that receives direct sunlight in order to collect unlimited light. A current obstacle to widespread use is the requirement for space for the panels which is larger than the room needed for other sources of power. It’s a fascinating process that uses a renewable, clean source of energy to power the things we’ve gotten use to having in our homes. Unlike fossil fuels, solar energy is unlimited and renewable.
